It’s never been put any better than this: “I love my clients.” That may be why Robert Reitsema, senior account executive at Edith Roman, has never lost one.

But his success may also be due to the fact that he can handle just about anything. Need a mailing list? See Robert. Need a data overlay or a merge purge? Give him a call. Want to do an email append? He can help. And he’s especially good at finding cost savings—a skill much in demand these days.

“Most clients are facing budget cuts,” he says. “At Edith Roman, we have many ways for them to save money and mail smarter.

One way is to use our BRAD/BEN postal and email response database, he says. You can get a large enough quantity of names to meet your mailing needs. But you won’t get hit with minimums, or with having to use unnecessary selects the way you might when renting multiple files.

What’s more, there are no merge-purge costs. And you can match your file against BRAD/BEN to learn who your customers are. Looking for prospects that meet the same criteria? We’ve got ‘em.

Then there’s email append. By appending email names, you can avoid paying for those addresses when you rent an outside file. Why pay another list owner to email your own customers?

Email append can also help you reactivate older customers. Maybe they haven’t responded to postal mailings, but they’ll often come back if you send them an email. And, in general, it always pays to have a customer’s email address.

Let’s say you’re a seminar producer, sending time-sensitive material. “You need an answer quickly,” Robert says. “You want to know that day if you have enough people to attend a seminar next month. If you do a postal mailing, you won’t know for another month.”

This is no time to cut down on your marketing. “You want to be the one who is out there,” Robert advises. “It shows you have a strong company.” And it will put you ahead of the curve when the economy returns.

Robert got into direct marketing—indirectly. His dad was a civil engineer, and Robert spent his summers going out with surveying crews. He still has topographical maps he did as a teenager. He entered Manhattan College, hoping to become an engineer, but a marketing course inspired him to “be more creative.” He ended up taking degrees in marketing and business management.

He took a year off after graduating, tending bar and working in a pizzeria. Then he joined Edith Roman and began the familiar career path from “production person to junior salesperson to salesperson.” He adds: “We all love it here.”

Robert and his wife Evelyn live in Tappan, NY. They have been joined by their daughter Julie, who was born on May 22. Any pets? “My pets are a bunch of animals that live in my backyard—deer, squirrels, ground hogs, a fox, rabbits, raccoons and tons of birds,” Robert laughs.

Robert loves to spend time with his family. But he’s also writing and illustrating a children’s book, doing a cartoon book and writing a comedy.

He’s a busy guy. Does he want us to squeeze anything else in?

“Be deep ba deep ba deep, that’s all folks.”
